Embodying Asana: stories behind the yoga postures

  • LiveWell Camas 417 Northeast Birch Street Camas, WA, 98607 United States (map)

Have you ever been curious what a teacher means when they say "Ardha Chandrasana" or "Garudasana" and wonder how on earth did that name come about? Many asanas, or yoga postures, have names and aspects that are rich in meaning and connection beyond the physical world.

Join Maya in this playful and informative series that will bring to life various asanas through their stories and spiritual meanings. Asana's are rooted in the Indian Vedic tradition and are deeply symbolic. Knowing their symbolism can inspire and deepen your yoga practice by offering you a new energetic way to embody the asanas as well as helping you to boost your concentration and focus as you practice. New layers of insight grow as you practice with the awareness of the symbolic stories, affecting how you experience the asana on all levels (mental, physical and emotional).

Each class will begin with a lab, so to speak, providing you with the stories behind a few key asanas as well as technical aspects and time to practice and play. (There will be hands-on adjustments offered to those interested.) Once that foundation is laid in the first half of class, Maya will then guide you through a vinyasa-style flow so you can practice with this new awareness and bring to life the stories you just learned.

If you enjoy storytelling and you're feeling inspired to deepen your practice, this series just might be the ticket!

Maya received her yoga teacher training in India in 2011, where she later returned to briefly live and teach. She’s honored to have the opportunity to connect through sharing this healing practice as we all learn and grow together.
